She looked at him with a smile that spoke the feelings she was terrified to reveal. It was almost doubtless to her that those feelings were mutual, but the past has a tendency to terrify the future: the young woman lying beside him was no stranger to unrequited love. She wanted to feel an explosion where everything remained contained within her, instead of coming unglued right there and being forced to retrieve pieces of herself from the distant corners of reality.
People often fall unprovoked, when loving someone is a thought that sways in the background, whose voice is drowned by a chorus of more talented thoughts: careers, education, and other relationships to name a few. They met around the time when her relationship started to unravel, and although she managed to stave the end for another eight months there was something about his crooked nose, his playfulness, and the glasses that slid off his face when he lay beside her that she found enchanting.
Both of them were hesitant to reveal their feelings for the same reason the other thought it smart not to. For him, the possibility of rejection was intensified by the fact that her previous relationship had been so serious and ended recently. For her, the idea of him being closed to love was devastating. Both of them wanted to lose themselves in each other, and neither wanted to lose the other.
But they gave small indications to their true feelings. She laid her head on his shoulder, and he moved his hands closer to touching hers. She looked around the room with its painted ceiling and tried to imagine the last time she felt so comfortable and happy with someone. The only memories that surfaced were of him.
They looked at each other with enamored stares and neither could remember from that moment onwards who initiated the kiss. Their faces moved together until their lips touched. He opened his mouth to kiss her fully; his lips were sandpaper but his mouth was soft and the kiss was gentle. Somewhere in the middle of it he found the courage to draw her body closer to his and wrap his arm around her waist. She molded into him, arms around his neck, each of their heartbeats crashing like a wave against their chests.
Nothing mattered to them except their tangled bodies and the wordless love they shared. The kiss broke; words couldn't describe it anyways.
